Daily Investment Morning Brief
Saturday, October 31, 2026 | 7:55 AM KST
Research window: October 30 U.S. trading session and subsequent developments.
The biggest change since yesterday: investors are no longer simply moving away from expensive AI stocks. They are increasingly questioning whether the entire AI investment boom can generate enough cash to justify its cost.
Yesterday's report noted that small-cap stocks were holding up despite technology weakness. That changed Friday: the Nasdaq fell 2.86%, while the Russell 2000 also declined 1.66%.
More importantly, individual stocks reveal different problems hidden beneath the broad selloff. Reddit faces a threat to how it attracts users. Intel faces a production and cash-flow problem. Sandisk is growing rapidly, yet investors are selling its shares. (Investing.com South Africa)
1. Deep dives
RDDT — Reddit's biggest threat may be the same AI companies paying for its data
Finding: Reddit's business is still growing rapidly, but investors are questioning whether it controls its own future audience.
Reddit shares fell 29.3% on October 30, despite quarterly revenue increasing 53%.
The more important development was management's warning that Google's AI-generated search answers are reducing traffic to Reddit. More than one million weekly search referrals have reportedly disappeared. Management warned that continued weakness could materially reduce daily users. (Reuters) Community debate: Two directly reviewed discussions reveal an interesting disagreement.
In r/stocks one investor described noticing that Google increasingly answers questions directly, eliminating the need to visit Reddit. Despite recognizing the problem, that investor bought more shares before earnings.
In r/wallstreetbets investors debated Reddit's plan to require more visitors to log in. Critics argue this will discourage casual visitors. Supporters believe it could reduce automated traffic and make Reddit's content more valuable.
My assessment: Both arguments contain some truth, but they address different problems.
Reddit's valuable content helps attract visitors and AI licensing customers. However, Google controls an important distribution channel and can answer questions using information from Reddit without necessarily sending visitors back.
Reddit's announcement that logged-in and app users continued growing provides an important counterargument: its most valuable audience may become less dependent on search.
What would change my judgment: Sustained growth in direct app usage and logged-in users despite falling search referrals. That would suggest Reddit is successfully becoming a destination rather than remaining dependent on Google.
Until then, the risk is structural, not simply a disappointing earnings quarter.
INTC — Intel's problem is no longer whether AI demand exists
Finding: Intel has customers, but producing enough chips profitably has become the critical problem.
Intel fell approximately 28.6% on Friday. Its latest revenue guidance was far below expectations, even though its data-center business grew strongly.
There are three competing explanations: weaker PC demand, temporary factory disruption, and the cost of expanding manufacturing.
A useful numerical check separates them. Intel estimated that an October factory explosion in Israel would reduce fourth-quarter revenue by approximately $300 million. But the midpoint of its revenue guidance was about $1.57 billion below analysts' expectations.
The factory incident explains only about 19% of that gap. Treating the entire earnings disappointment as a temporary factory problem would therefore be misleading. (Euronext) Community debate: In a directly reviewed r/stocks discussion some investors blamed longer PC replacement cycles and expensive memory. Others argued that government support and Intel's recent turnaround still provide reasons for optimism.
Those comments reflect a genuine disagreement about the business, not just its share price.
Market evidence: Concern also reached the debt market. The cost of insuring Intel's debt against default increased sharply, reaching a reported record. This is stronger evidence of financial concern than negative social-media commentary alone. (Reuters) My assessment: Intel could benefit substantially from AI demand while still producing disappointing returns for shareholders. Manufacturing capacity, capital expenditure, and borrowing costs may absorb the benefits of stronger sales.
What to watch: Whether factory recovery improves deliveries, and whether Intel can reduce cash consumption while expanding manufacturing. A strong recovery in shipments without a proportional increase in spending would weaken the bearish argument.
SNDK — Strong earnings do not necessarily mean a stock is undervalued
Finding: Sandisk offers evidence that AI-related demand remains strong, even as investors reduce exposure to AI-related stocks.
Sandisk reported extraordinary financial performance: quarterly revenue rose 23% from the previous quarter, data-center revenue grew 61%, and gross margin reached approximately 85%.
Nevertheless, its shares fell 13.4% on Friday. (Sandisk Corporation) Community debate: A directly reviewed discussion among Sandisk investors from October 25 showed that some participants expected excellent earnings but still anticipated a falling share price.
Their reasoning was that favorable earnings had already been incorporated into expectations, while broader market conditions remained unfavorable.
Another discussion emphasized a different concern: even excellent operating results might not be sufficient when investors expect exceptionally strong future growth. These are earlier views, not verified new October 30 comments. (Reddit) My assessment: The October 30 decline does not establish that demand for Sandisk products is weakening.
It may instead reflect investors becoming less willing to pay high prices for future earnings. Sandisk's unusual profitability also raises an important question: how much depends on today's exceptionally favorable memory-market conditions?
The strongest bullish argument is that data-center demand remains substantial and supply constraints could persist.
The strongest bearish argument is that memory is a cyclical business. Exceptionally high margins may eventually encourage more production, reducing future profitability.
What to watch: NAND flash contract prices, inventory growth, and gross margins over subsequent quarters. Continued pricing strength would support the bullish case; rising supply combined with falling prices would support the bearish case.
BTC / Binance — Bitcoin's price is not a reliable measure of exchange safety
Finding: The market is dealing with two distinct risks: losses at Binance and forced selling among leveraged cryptocurrency traders.
The previously reported Binance incident has become more clearly defined.
Reuters reports that Binance reserved more than $6.34 billion in company assets to address the attack and said approximately $3 billion in affected assets had been frozen.
These figures should not be added together. Reserved funds, frozen assets, and final unrecovered losses are different measures. (Reuters) Community debate: Two recent, directly reviewed Bitcoin discussions illustrate the disagreement.
In one r/Bitcoin thread investors described the selloff as a potential buying opportunity. Some argued that Bitcoin's decline was relatively modest given the scale of the incident.
In another discussion participants focused on customer protection and whether Binance would compensate customers for assets that could not be recovered.
These are small discussion samples, not representative measures of cryptocurrency investor sentiment.
Market evidence: CoinDesk reported approximately $1.57 billion in cryptocurrency futures liquidations over 24 hours. Bitcoin options positioning also became more defensive, with increased demand for downside protection. (CoinDesk) My assessment: Bitcoin recovering would not establish that Binance is financially sound. Likewise, a price decline would not establish that Binance is insolvent.
The immediate risks involve customer withdrawals, asset recovery, and confidence in the exchange's reserves. Leveraged liquidations can amplify price moves without revealing the long-term value of Bitcoin.
What to watch: Withdrawal restoration, independently verifiable reserve information, and the difference between frozen assets and permanently unrecovered losses.
2. Other material developments
Big Tech — The overlooked cost of AI investment is fewer share buybacks
Reuters examined Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, and Oracle.
During the first nine months of 2026, these companies generated approximately $543 billion in operating cash flow but spent nearly $557 billion on capital expenditure.
Their combined free cash flow turned negative, and share repurchases declined 83% from a year earlier. (Reuters) My interpretation: Investors face two uncertainties, not one. AI spending must eventually generate acceptable returns, but companies are also reducing a familiar source of support for their shares: buying back their own stock.
This helps explain why good earnings are no longer sufficient to reassure investors.
Derivatives — Bitcoin traders are paying more for protection
Bitcoin's October 30 options expiration occurred amid rising downside demand and substantial forced liquidations.
The important signal is not simply the large value of expiring contracts. It is the combination of increased demand for protective put options and liquidation-driven selling.
That combination suggests defensive positioning, but it does not establish where Bitcoin will trade next week. (CoinDesk)
RWAs — Hanwha and Chainlink move toward institutional tokenization infrastructure
Hanwha Investment & Securities and Chainlink announced a partnership on October 29 to develop infrastructure for tokenized assets, including pricing data, cross-chain transfers, and collateral applications. This is a newly reviewed item, although the announcement itself predates the main October 30 research window. (Chainlink) My assessment: The meaningful question is whether this infrastructure leads to actual financial products, transaction volumes, and institutional customers.
A technical partnership does not by itself establish market demand or future LINK token revenue. There is no verified evidence yet that it has produced significant new tokenized assets.
3. Bottom line
Three observations deserve continued monitoring:
- AI investment: Whether strong revenue growth begins producing better free cash flow, or whether increasing infrastructure costs continue to absorb it.
- Reddit and internet businesses: Whether AI search reduces their dependence on external referral traffic or makes that dependence more dangerous.
- Cryptocurrency: Whether Binance restores normal operations and provides convincing evidence that customer assets remain adequately protected.
The strongest research insight today is that good operating performance and attractive stock returns are becoming increasingly separate questions. Sandisk illustrates this through expectations and valuation; Intel through capital requirements; Reddit through the durability of its customer acquisition.
I found no sufficiently established new trading strategy to label as a credible source of alpha.
Research limitations: Stock-level community observations are based on selected, directly reviewed Reddit discussions, not representative surveys. I could not verify comprehensive institutional positioning or live X sentiment. Market moves refer to Friday's U.S. closing session, not live Saturday prices.
Community narratives can be biased, delayed, or manipulated. This report is analytical research, not investment advice.
