Daily Investment Morning Brief
Sunday, November 1, 2026 | 8:00 AM KST
Compared with the October 31 brief. U.S. stock markets were closed on Saturday, so today's analysis focuses on new information, changing investment arguments, and developments worth watching when trading resumes.
Two developments stand out. A reported reduction in OpenAI's fundraising target raises new questions about who can finance the AI infrastructure boom. Meanwhile, Binance says it has replaced 90% of the assets stolen in its security breach—but the recovery raises a second question about the safety reserves supporting its futures market.
Research limitation: I could not independently verify fresh October 31 Reddit or X comment threads. The competing viewpoints below therefore come from identifiable analysts, company disclosures, and market evidence—not a claimed survey of retail investors.
Deep dives
1. NBIS — The AI infrastructure boom may face a financing problem before a demand problem
My finding: Strong demand for AI computing does not guarantee that companies building data centers can finance their expansion.
Reuters reported on October 31 that OpenAI had reduced its fundraising target from approximately $30 billion to $20 billion. Its targeted valuation reportedly fell from $1.4 trillion to $1.25 trillion. This is information attributed to people familiar with the fundraising, not a confirmed company announcement. (Reuters) This matters particularly for companies such as Nebius (NBIS) and CoreWeave (CRWV), which build computing infrastructure that AI companies rent.
The two market arguments differ fundamentally.
The bullish view is that demand for AI computing remains enormous. Capacity shortages could support strong pricing and long-term contracts.
The bearish view is that demand alone is insufficient. Customers must finance their commitments, and infrastructure providers must obtain capital to build capacity before earning revenue from it.
Nebius was already under pressure on Friday, falling approximately 9.1% in morning trading amid broader concerns about AI infrastructure spending. That happened before the fundraising report became public, so the later report cannot be presented as the cause of Friday's decline. (Investing.com) My assessment: The new information strengthens the case for distinguishing AI companies with funded customers and strong balance sheets from those relying heavily on continued fundraising.
It does not prove that OpenAI will cancel computing contracts.
What would change my judgment: Evidence that major AI customers can fund their contracted capacity, together with successful financing and deployment of new data centers. Nebius's November 12 earnings should provide another opportunity to examine execution.
2. COIN — Coinbase may benefit from Binance's problems, but its existing business is weakening
My finding: Coinbase's apparent opportunity to win Binance customers conflicts with the weakness in its own trading business.
Coinbase shares fell sharply on October 30 as the Binance incident affected cryptocurrency-related stocks.
The obvious bullish argument is that customers concerned about Binance may move to Coinbase.
However, Coinbase's October 29 quarterly report reveals a more complicated picture.
Its transaction revenue declined from approximately $1 billion to $590 million year over year. Monthly transacting users fell from 9.3 million to 7.4 million.
Meanwhile, Coinbase reported approximately $719 million in net income, including a $715 million gain on cryptocurrency assets held for investment. Those gains are not the same as recurring profits from operating an exchange. (SEC) The market's reaction is therefore not simply an indiscriminate response to Binance.
Investors have a second concern: Coinbase's core trading activity is much weaker than a year earlier. Industry coverage reported declines of more than 10% in COIN during Friday's session, alongside losses in other cryptocurrency-related equities. (Yahoo Finance) My assessment: Coinbase could gain customers without necessarily improving profitability.
Customers moving assets into custody but rarely trading may contribute less revenue than active traders.
The strongest counterargument is that Coinbase has developed other businesses, including subscriptions, stablecoin services, derivatives, and prediction markets. Those could eventually reduce its dependence on ordinary cryptocurrency trading.
What to watch: Whether Coinbase reports rising customer balances, trading activity, and transaction revenue after Binance restores withdrawals. Customer migration alone would not establish an earnings benefit.
3. GOOGL — Is Google's selloff about excessive spending or a damaged business model?
My finding: Google's market valuation is being challenged more aggressively than its current operating performance.
This is a continuation of Thursday's selloff, but a new argument emerged over the weekend.
Barron's published a bullish assessment arguing that Alphabet has become unusually inexpensive relative to Apple. Its suggested upside approaches 50% if the historical valuation relationship returns. That is a valuation scenario, not a price forecast established by operating results. (Barron's) The underlying operating evidence presents an interesting contradiction.
Alphabet's October 28 results showed Google Search revenue growing 12%, Google Cloud growing 103%, and consolidated operating income increasing 30%. (SEC) These figures do not describe a collapsing business.
However, the bearish argument concerns future economics rather than current revenue. AI may require more computing investment while reducing the value of traditional search advertising.
There is also a connection to yesterday's Reddit analysis: Google's AI-generated answers can reduce traffic to websites such as Reddit, potentially strengthening Google's control over user interactions while weakening the broader content ecosystem.
My assessment: The bullish valuation argument is plausible, but comparing Google's price-to-earnings ratio with Apple's historical ratio assumes that their future business risks remain comparable.
That assumption needs testing.
Google could be both a major AI beneficiary and a company whose traditional search economics deteriorate.
What to watch: Search revenue growth, advertising profitability, cloud margins, and capital expenditure. If Google's operating cash generation remains strong despite AI investment, the valuation argument becomes more persuasive.
4. BNB / Binance — Customer balances may recover while another layer of risk increases
My finding: Binance's recovery progress is encouraging, but the source of replacement funds matters.
On October 31, Binance announced that it had replenished approximately 90% of the assets stolen in its $6.3 billion security incident, up from 80% previously.
It says major customer assets, including BTC, ETH, BNB, USDT, and USDC, are fully backed. The remaining shortfall involves less-liquid tokens.
This is Binance's claim. Independent cryptographic verification of the latest reserve snapshot is expected by November 3. (Binance) The less obvious development concerns how Binance financed the recovery.
Binance says it used corporate funds and part of its futures insurance fund, with some support also planned from its Secure Asset Fund for Users.
A futures insurance fund helps absorb losses when leveraged traders cannot meet their obligations. It is a protection mechanism for the derivatives market.
Using some of that money to replenish stolen assets could reduce one risk while consuming part of another protective buffer.
Binance says the remaining insurance fund still satisfies its requirements. The exact economic effect cannot be established without knowing its current balance and potential future liabilities. (CoinDesk) The cryptocurrency Fear & Greed Index remains at 30, unchanged from yesterday. This is a broad market indicator, not direct evidence of Binance customers' confidence. (Alternative.me) My assessment: Binance appears to have made substantial progress toward restoring customer asset coverage, but financial recovery and operational recovery are different things.
What to watch: Actual withdrawal restoration, independently verifiable reserves on November 3, and the remaining futures insurance fund balance.
Other material shifts
RWA / Tokenization — Uber demonstrates a practical institutional use case
On October 30, HSBC, Franklin Templeton, Tradeweb, Fireblocks, and Uber announced a completed pilot on the Canton Network.
Uber used tokenized HSBC deposits to purchase tokenized money-market fund shares and demonstrated the ability to access those funds outside normal market hours. (Tradeweb) Why this is more interesting than another tokenization partnership: A corporate treasury normally faces a tradeoff between keeping cash immediately available and investing it to earn interest.
The pilot attempts to reduce that tradeoff.
The potential economic benefit is measurable: fewer idle cash balances, more time earning yield, and faster access to operational funds.
However, the announcement does not establish commercial transaction volume, actual savings, or customer adoption beyond the pilot.
My assessment: This is a credible demonstration of useful financial infrastructure, not yet evidence of substantial revenue for any participating company or token.
Derivatives — Traders are betting on Anthropic's IPO without owning any shares
A newly reported Hyperliquid market allows traders to speculate on Anthropic's future share value through perpetual futures.
One contract, ANT, fell approximately 20% shortly after trading began. The reported initial trading volume reached $8.7 million, with leverage of up to 10 times. (CoinDesk) There is a serious price-discovery problem.
Anthropic shares are not publicly traded. The contracts are not backed by actual Anthropic equity, and holders receive no ownership rights.
My assessment: These prices reveal what a small, leveraged derivatives market is willing to trade—not a reliable market valuation of Anthropic.
Until there is a liquid underlying equity market, the contracts may measure speculative positioning more than fundamental value.
Data quality — An apparent Alamos Gold sentiment surge is probably unrelated to gold
ApeWisdom reports a 700% increase in mentions of AGI, the ticker for Alamos Gold.
However, its nearby keywords include generic phrases about whether something will ever be achieved. They appear more consistent with discussions of artificial general intelligence than with the mining company.
The tracker does not provide convincing evidence that the attention concerns Alamos Gold. (Ape Wisdom) Conclusion: Exclude AGI from stock-sentiment analysis until company-specific discussions can be verified.
Bottom line
The most important emerging theme is the distinction between demand and the ability to finance that demand. That applies to AI infrastructure, cryptocurrency exchanges, and even institutional tokenization.
For November 2–3, the most useful checks are OpenAI's actual fundraising outcome, Binance's withdrawal operations and reserve verification, and whether AI infrastructure stocks stabilize when U.S. trading resumes.
I found no sufficiently supported new trading strategy to classify as genuine alpha.
Community opinions and apparent market signals can be biased, delayed, or manipulated. This report is research, not investment advice.
