Daily Investment Morning Brief
Monday, November 2, 2026 | 7:55 AM KST
Compared with the November 1 brief. U.S. stock markets were closed over the weekend; Korean markets have not yet opened today.
The most interesting new evidence contradicts part of the recent AI-stock selloff. Investors are worried that AI infrastructure spending is becoming unsustainable, yet South Korea's latest export figures show extraordinary demand for memory chips.
Meanwhile, Binance has reopened withdrawals after its security breach. The first customer transactions provide a more meaningful measure of confidence than cryptocurrency prices alone.
1. Deep dives
SK Hynix (000660) — Strong demand is real, but how much is already reflected in prices?
Finding: The memory boom remains exceptionally strong. The investment question is whether chipmakers can protect today's profits when supply eventually catches up.
South Korea reported October semiconductor exports of $56.44 billion, up 259.4% from a year earlier, on November 1.
That sounds like an extraordinary acceleration. But two details matter.
First, semiconductor exports were actually lower than September's $60.3 billion. Second, October benefited from more working days than a year earlier because of the timing of the Chuseok holiday.
Even after adjusting for working days, however, total Korean exports rose 76%. The demand strength cannot simply be dismissed as a calendar effect. (Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy) Community debate: In a recent r/stocks discussion investors disagreed over whether memory manufacturers will collapse once AI data-center construction slows.
The bullish argument is that hardware needs replacement and new AI applications will require continually expanding computing capacity.
The bearish argument is more subtle: memory chips are historically cyclical. When manufacturers earn exceptional profits, they eventually invest in more capacity. That can create oversupply and falling prices.
One investor specifically questioned whether Micron's low price-to-earnings ratio reflects a bargain or the market's expectation that profits are near a cyclical peak.
My assessment: SK Hynix has better protection against the traditional memory cycle than investors sometimes acknowledge.
Its October 28 results disclosed long-term agreements covering more than 50% of planned production capacity for 2027–2028, with prices adjusted within agreed ranges. (PR Newswire) But that does not mean half its future revenue is guaranteed at today's prices.
A separate r/MU_Stock discussion makes an important distinction: contract duration matters less than minimum prices, advance payments, and cancellation penalties. Some contract details discussed there remain unverified.
What would change my judgment: Evidence that major customers can reduce committed purchases without meaningful penalties, or that new production capacity is growing faster than demand.
The strongest bullish signal would be additional contracts protecting minimum pricing through the next capacity expansion.
Samsung Electronics (005930) — The memory shortage is helping one business while hurting another
Finding: Samsung presents a less straightforward way to invest in the memory boom than SK Hynix.
The November 1 export figures strengthen the case that memory demand remains high.
Samsung's October 29 earnings provide a useful counterpoint: its semiconductor division reported exceptional profitability, but its device business recorded an operating loss.
This creates an unusual conflict inside the same company.
Higher memory prices improve Samsung's semiconductor profits, but they can also raise component costs for smartphones, computers, and other electronics. Samsung specifically identified cost pressure in its device businesses. (Samsung Semiconductor Newsroom) Community sentiment: The broader semiconductor discussion is optimistic about sustained demand but skeptical about the durability of today's margins. I found no sufficiently recent, independent Samsung-specific discussion to establish that retail investors have materially changed their views since Friday.
My assessment: Samsung could outperform if it gains market share in high-bandwidth memory while successfully expanding advanced manufacturing.
However, simply assuming that higher memory prices translate proportionally into higher group profits overlooks its other businesses.
The more useful comparison with SK Hynix is not which company reports faster revenue growth.
It is which company can convert unusually favorable memory prices into durable cash flow after funding new factories.
Samsung's manufacturing diversification provides opportunities, but also demands additional capital.
The strongest counterargument is that its scale and diversified operations could cushion a future memory downturn.
What to watch: High-bandwidth memory market share, semiconductor margins, device-business profitability, and the cash required for manufacturing expansion.
If semiconductor profits remain strong while device losses widen, the apparent benefits of the memory boom may be less attractive than headline earnings suggest.
Reddit (RDDT) — Investors disagree about the meaning of management's warning
Finding: The disagreement has shifted from whether Reddit faces a problem to how much damage investors should assume.
Yesterday's report examined Google's AI search as a threat to Reddit's visitor traffic.
A new November 1 r/stocks discussion focuses on a distinction that could matter for valuation.
Reddit's management warned that daily users could fall by a low-double-digit percentage if declining Google referrals continue.
One investor argues that the market treated this conditional warning as though management had explicitly forecast such a decline. That investor believes Friday's approximately 29% selloff was excessive.
Other commenters strongly disagree. They point out that the traffic decline is already happening and management has not demonstrated how it will reverse it. (Reuters) The critical distinction: A conditional warning is not a forecast. But the absence of a forecast does not mean the underlying risk is small.
Reddit's official results provide some support for both sides.
Overall daily active users grew 12% year over year, while logged-in and app users increased from the preceding quarter. Those users are particularly important for advertising. (Reddit Investor Relations) However, Google's search changes could still undermine Reddit's ability to attract new visitors.
My assessment: The market may have overreacted to the worst-case interpretation, but there is insufficient evidence to conclude that it has.
A company can report strong current profits while the market reduces its valuation because future audience growth has become less predictable.
What would change my judgment: Continued growth in direct app usage and logged-in users, especially if Google referrals keep declining.
That would show Reddit is becoming less dependent on search. Without it, a short-term stock rebound would not resolve the structural concern.
BNB / Binance — The first withdrawal figures provide a clearer picture of customer confidence
Finding: Binance's immediate liquidity position appears stronger than the most alarming interpretations suggested, but a substantial number of customers are reducing exposure.
Since yesterday's report, Binance has increased its claimed replacement of stolen assets from 90% to 95%.
More importantly, it began restoring withdrawals on November 1.
During the first 9.5 hours after reopening, customers withdrew approximately $4.65 billion and deposited $1.01 billion.
That produces a net outflow of $3.64 billion, or approximately 2.1% of the $171 billion in assets Binance reported holding before the incident. (Binance) These figures tell two different stories.
The bullish interpretation is that Binance processed billions in withdrawals without a reported new liquidity crisis. A 2.1% net outflow is substantially less alarming than the headline withdrawal amount.
The bearish interpretation is that customers removed billions immediately after access was restored. That is evidence of reduced confidence, even if the exchange can meet withdrawals.
My assessment: The evidence favors operational stabilization, but not a full restoration of trust.
There is also an important implication for Coinbase (COIN), discussed yesterday.
Binance losing customer assets does not prove Coinbase is receiving them. The money could move into private wallets, other exchanges, or stablecoin custody arrangements.
Without destination data, claiming that Coinbase benefits directly would be speculation.
What would change my judgment: Continued large net outflows, renewed withdrawal restrictions, or discrepancies in Binance's forthcoming proof-of-reserves report.
Conversely, stable withdrawal operations and independently verifiable reserve coverage would weaken the immediate liquidity concerns.
2. Other material developments
Derivatives — Bitcoin's forced-selling pressure has eased considerably
Bitcoin derivatives data provide another useful distinction between immediate market panic and longer-term risk.
At 7:32 AM KST on November 2, Liqwall reported approximately $14.8 million in Bitcoin futures liquidations over the preceding 24 hours.
Its recorded October 30 total was approximately $337 million.
Open interest was around $29.8 billion, down 1% over 24 hours. Funding rates remained slightly positive, meaning traders holding leveraged long positions were generally paying those holding shorts. (Liqwall) My interpretation: The most intense forced-selling episode appears to have subsided.
However, reduced liquidations are not proof that investors have become bullish. They may simply indicate that highly leveraged positions have already been closed.
The relevant next signal is whether open interest begins rebuilding alongside improving prices and exchange liquidity.
RWAs — No significant new development confirmed
I found no sufficiently verified November 1 announcement that materially changes the outlook for an individual tokenized asset or issuer.
The previously reported HSBC/Uber tokenized money-market fund pilot remains relevant, but repeating that announcement would add little.
The larger unresolved question is still whether tokenized financial instruments can attract meaningful commercial transaction volumes rather than remain limited to demonstrations and pilots.
3. Bottom line
My highest-conviction research observation today concerns memory manufacturers.
The recent AI-equity selloff reflects doubts about the financial returns on infrastructure investment. But actual Korean export data show that suppliers are still enjoying exceptionally strong demand.
These observations are not contradictory: suppliers can perform extremely well while their customers struggle to earn acceptable returns.
The key question is how long that imbalance can persist.
SK Hynix's customer contracts, Samsung's manufacturing profitability, and future memory prices will help answer it.
For cryptocurrency, Binance's next reserve verification is more important than an isolated movement in BNB or Bitcoin.
The most important unresolved evidence gaps are complete memory-contract terms, representative investor positioning in individual semiconductor stocks, and independently confirmed post-incident reserves at Binance.
I found no sufficiently supported new trading strategy to classify as genuine alpha.
Community opinions can be biased or unrepresentative, and market positioning can change rapidly. This is investment research, not financial advice.
